Meet Our October Spotlight: Marie Menyes, M.S. CCC-SLP!

It is that time to recognize another one of DotCom Therapy’s amazing speech-language pathologists, Marie Menyes!  One of my favorite things about working with Marie is her energy and compassion toward her students.  Her sessions are so fun to watch and the students are always incredibly engaged that I think they forget that they’re learning.  I asked Marie to answer some questions to let us know even more about her.

1.) What made you want to become a speech therapist?

"I actually was a psychology major in my undergrad. I liked the brain and loved learning about human development. My mom had terminal brain cancer when I was 16 and she had numerous surgeries which led her to be severely aphasic. She worked with a speech pathologist to regain her speech. I was fascinated by it. When I was in my senior year of college I quickly realized I actually DIDN'T want to be a psychotherapist but I had no idea what to do. My dad suggested I actually go into speech-language pathology, so I took a few classes and I was hooked! It became my driving passion and I never turned back! Within a year, I was starting grad school! Talk about quick decision making, right?!”

2.) What made you want to join the DotCom Therapy team?

"I have been wanting to become involved in teletherapy for years. It wasn't until these past few months that I was bold enough to say yes to myself! I was working in a skilled nursing facility before and made the change and am SO glad I did because I LOVE DotCom Therapy! I have always had a very flexible schedule and I travel a lot, so it definitely fit my lifestyle. Not to mention, I actually did my case studies in grad school about teletherapy and realized just how much it was needed in some rural locations. I really wanted to work with caseloads who needed the therapy!”

3.) What has been your favorite thing about teletherapy?

"Absolutely everything! I love the flexibility of it! I haven't been able to be this flexible in years! The other week, I visited my dad in Cincinnati for almost an entire week and it was amazing! I would have never been able to do that before! On top of it, I love having my days reversed and spending my mornings more relaxed and just working more later in the day. I have never been a morning person and now I can truly say I have energy for all of my sessions. I'm actually able to spend time planning my sessions well, and it fits my lifestyle! I also LOVE the Alaskan students. I have never had a more rewarding therapy experience!”

4.) Fill in the blank.  When I’m not working, you’ll most likely find me…

"I could be one of numerous places. I'm either outside running some crazy long run somewhere, traveling in a random country (because I start to go crazy if even a month goes by and I don't go anywhere), in a Mexican restaurant, hiking in the mountains somewhere, locked in a room doing crafts spread all over the floor (don't let my husband see the mess), or anywhere where they have giraffes. I have too many interests to keep track of!”

Thank you, Marie, for giving us the opportunity to get to know you better.  Also, thanks for being such an essential part of our DotCom Therapy team!
