This December Spotlight is truly a wonderful therapist as evidenced by the amazing feedback we receive from her schools. In addition to the feedback received from her schools, Kayla was highly involved with piloting our Occupational Therapy program in the 2016-2017 school year.  She assisted the DotCom Therapy team by gathering objective data and providing feedback that resulted in successful launch of provision of occupational therapy services. Kayla is unquestionably a valued member of our family.

Let’s get to know Kayla better!

1.) What made you want to become an occupational therapist?

When I was younger, my grandfather was in a car accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. My mom went to a lot of his occupational therapy appointments with him and felt it would be something I would be great at doing! She was right. I initially worked with the adult population following a stroke or brain injury the first part of my career and just recently switched to pediatrics when working for DCT, which I love!

2.) What made you want to join the DotCom Therapy team?

After speaking with the DotCom Therapy team for just a few minutes, it was clear the passion they had for providing services to children across the world. To be able to reach more students and remove the location barrier was amazing, and I knew immediately I wanted to be a part of this team. My husband had recently taken a position out of state and I wanted to transition to a career that would allow me to be at home with my daughter more. An OT I went to college with encouraged me to apply to DCT as she was their Senior Advisor of Occupational Therapy, leading development of their program. The best decision I have ever made!

3.) What has been your favorite thing about teletherapy?

My favorite thing so far has just been getting to know the students. They are all so interactive and enjoy getting to use the computer for therapy. It's been so rewarding seeing them meet their goals and be proud of themselves. I also love that teletherapy allows me so much flexibility between my professional life and my home life. It has provided me so much more time with my daughter and allowed for me to be a better therapist.

4.) Fill in the blank.  When I’m not working, you’ll most likely find me….

Spending time with my 2 year old daughter and my husband, traveling the world as much as I can, and drinking coffee!

Kayla,  thanks for all you do for your school staff, students and the DotCom Family!
