Meet Our February Spotlight: Holly Garrett, M.S. CCC-SLP

blog photo

Our February Spotlight and rock-star Speech Therapist, Holly Garrett, entered our team a little less than a year ago with an apparent passion for service provision that directly aligned with the DotCom Therapy™ mission statement, constitution and core values.  At that time, as Therapy Director, I remember leaving her interview feeling inspired and confident that we had just found another amazing member of our team.  About a year later and I’m so honored to spotlight a therapist that has been widely praised by her partner schools and on-site therapists.  Let’s learn more about Holly!

1.) What made you want to become a speech therapist?

I decided to become a Speech Therapist my senior year of high school. All I knew was that I wanted to work with people. I realized then that Speech Therapy was an incredibly versatile profession that would allow me to work with people of any age and with a variety of needs in many different environments. I was excited about the different opportunities the versatility would provide. That year, I shadowed a therapist at an elementary school and really haven't stopped since! I still remember the students I worked with during that first experience in high school.

2.) What made you want to join the DotCom Therapy team?

I knew from my first visit to the DCT website that this company was different. Throughout all my interactions with the executive team when I first started to connect and ask questions about teletherapy, I felt the difference. DCT is a team of professionals that keeps exemplary service provision and unwavering employee support at the forefront of their operations and it shows in everything they do. I was so impressed with my initial experiences with this company and how they present themselves in the industry. I knew I wanted to be part of this innovative company that is not only therapist-run, but also female-founded! The merger of health, education, and tech is such a cool space to be in, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it as a DCT therapist from the very beginning.

3.) What has been your favorite thing about teletherapy?

Teletherapy has a very magical quality to me. I work with students who live thousands of miles away from me, who have had very different lifestyles and experiences. I was not likely to meet any of them in any other way in life if it weren't for teletherapy. Yet, we connect each day, from across the miles, picking up where we left off the previous session, asking about the days events, discussing the weather, and holidays, fun things, and hard things; genuinely connecting. The computer that I use to provide therapy services honestly fades away, and what remains is still genuine human connection with the students that I serve. I feel no less able to connect to my students via teletherapy than I would in person, despite the fact that we have never even been in the same time zone. I don't think I will ever get used to what a cool thing that really is.

4.) Fill in the blank.  When I’m not working, you’ll most likely find me….

Reading, listening to, or watching something. I have a lot of interests and I am usually keeping up with one of the many books, articles, blogs, podcasts, documentaries, or online courses I am into at the moment. I am usually in the middle of dreaming up or actually planning my next travel adventure, big or small. For me, the anticipation and planning of a trip, especially to somewhere new, is almost as fun as actually going. By the time I get to my destination, I could work for the board of tourism. Though I move around a bit, I am a coastal girl at my core, and spend time with my family and friends in the Chesapeake Bay area as often as I can!
