I am pleased to announce our March spotlight, Emily O’Dell! Emily is a speech-language pathologist with an intense passion for understanding and implementing nationwide special education compliance. Additionally, she serves as a mentor for our DotCom Therapists.  She’s always willing to assist our team with compliance or documentation questions and directly contributes to making the services we provide beyond exceptional. Read below to get to know this incredible DotCom team member!

What made you want to become a speech therapist?

I wish I had a really cool story but I was honestly at a point in college where I had to declare a major so I did one of those career assessments they offered on campus and SLP was one of my results so I figured it couldn't hurt to take an intro class. I remember I had Dr. Linda Barboa for my first CSD class and she was just fun and engaging and she was such an advocate for our profession. I decided to stick with it after that, and now I have my own fun and inspiring stories about my students!

What made you want to join the DotCom Therapy team?

DotCom places so much value on their therapists and works hard to help each of us succeed and grow. I've seen DotCom grow from a small start-up to a company providing services in multiple states and countries and yet there continues to be a strong sense of community within the company. There is a culture of openness and support among therapists and with the executive staff and DotCom truly embodies what it means to be a team. I think everyone desires to feel valued and to be given the opportunity to grow in their career and I love that DotCom has made that possible!

What has been your favorite thing about teletherapy?

As a teletherapist I have so many wonderful opportunities to work with students who need us to invest in them as a person--to help them feel valued and capable of overcoming obstacles while meeting their goals. I get to celebrate progress with my students and be part of some wonderful special education teams that work to do what is best for students. There is so much that is personally rewarding in seeing students experience positive progress in their lives whether it be something as simple as a student being excited to show me the picture she colored in class or the celebration when a student meets his final speech goal and gets to graduate from speech. I get to experience all of that with my students and teletherapy allows me to be right there with them during those moments even from far away!

Fill in the blank.  When I’m not working, you’ll most likely find me watching Netflix or cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals! I really am a homebody and I'm happiest when I'm just spending time with my husband and my dog, eating good food, and relaxing. I am hoping that soon I will be able to say "you'll most likely find me playing with my pet goats" though!

Thank you for all you do, Emily.  We are fortunate to have you as a part of our DotCom Family!
