In case it hasn’t been said enough, DotCom Therapy is made up of the best-of-the-best therapists and staff members.  We want to take time monthly to recognize one of our therapists and let you, the blog readers, know more about him/her.  This month we want to recognize Kayla Turonis, M.S. CCC-SLP.  Kayla was one of the first ten therapists to join DotCom Therapy.

1.) Kayla, what made you want to become a speech therapist?

"When I was younger, I always loved to play school. Of course, I always wanted to be the teacher!  As I got older, I branched out into tutoring/babysitting where I could help children learn. I always enjoyed working with children, and I knew I would pick a career with that in mind. One day, when I was volunteering at a nursing home, I met a speech pathologist who inspired my love of working with adults and geriatric patients. When I learned I could work with children AND adults as an SLP, I was sold!”

2.) What made you want to join the DotCom Therapy team?

"I had been contemplating a job switch for a while. I loved my current position in my school, but the one hour drive there and back was draining. Technology has always been an interest of mine, along with traveling! Teletherapy seemed like a perfect fit for me! I interviewed with 4 teletherapy companies prior to DCT,  and I was offered the jobs. However, none seemed like a good match until I spoke with DCT Therapy Director, Elise. Her passion and love for her job was obvious from the start! I knew I wanted a job I could love that much. I also appreciated that DCT was founded and run by all SLPs! I knew that everyone would understand the daily accomplishments and struggles we come across in our field. I also loved the idea of having multiple experienced supervisors to bounce ideas off of! When Elise informed me that I would get the chance to speak with Emily, one of the founders, I was sold. Despite the billions of things I'm sure Emily had going on, she took time out of her busy day to get to know me. She of course asked questions about my SLP skills, but she also took the time to get to know me as a person.”

3.) What has been your favorite thing about teletherapy?

"I have so many favorites, it is hard to choose! I am going to give one speech pathology centered favorite and  one funny personal favorite.

1. Teletherapy has been awesome for expanding my skill base. I have learned to hone in on skills I never knew I had, which has been so rewarding. It is such an amazing feeling to approach therapy from a new angle, and find engaging techniques for my students. Bonus: kids love technology, and I am saving so many trees : )

2. My personal favorite is the fact that I get to work in 3 seconds! (or maybe it's that I can do laundry on my lunch).”

4.) Fill in the blank.  When I’m not working, you’ll most likely find me: "Reading romance novels or spending time with my family and friends.”

DotCom Therapy is truly made up of amazing therapists like Kayla. Thank you, Kayla, for all you do and keep up the good work!
